DICOM is a well-known imaging format and commands used by every medical image storage solutions as a standard. New radiology and diagnostic tools natively support DICOM format, while older modality can now be integrated to PACS and medical image storage systems using a supplementary modules. Ot access the stored medical images, a DICOM viewer is required. One of the main function of a DICOM viewer in a diagnostic image storage system is access control. All DICOM viewer developed by different solution providers are equipped with security measures that oblige medical personnel to enter their username and password before accessing the system. All activities are also logged, with every activity details captured properly.
A DICOM viewer is also designed with added ability to process medical images. Most medical personnel – mainly doctors – need the medical images to be equipped with measurement tags and other necessary enhancements so that they can conduct the analysis easily. As part of the medical image storage system, the algorithm used to process medical images is integrated into the DICOM viewer so that image processing can be conducted on the fly upon retrieval. Since the DICOM standard is used by all available solutions, image transfer and sharing between different medical facilities can also be done seamlessly.
